Wound Care: A Comprehensive Review - Hurst TX

February 4 @ 8:30 am – 5:00 pm CST (8 CCU’s PT/PTA and RN (Pending Approval)

Upon completion of this educational event, the physical therapist and Registered Nurse will have a better understanding and increased knowledge of how to evaluate the integumentary system and assess and treat injuries to the integumentary system.

Step 1

Wounds: Acute to Chronic (2.5 hours)

  • Identify layers of skin for intact skin
  • Identify wounds and stages of healing
  • Differentiate between acute and chronic wounds
  • Understand contributing factors to wound chronicity
  • Be able to utilize the TIME Clinical Decision Support Tool in their practice
  • Differentiate the 5 stage in the Wound Infection Continuum
  • Understand what causes Biofilm and the role it plays in chronic wounds
  • Identify MMPs and their role in wound chronicity
  • Identify ways to “jump start” a wound

Step 2

Assessment and Documentation (2 hours)

  • Understand when to document
  • Review and understand what to document
    • Etiology
      • Correctly assess and document Pressure Injuries based on new guidelines
        • Stage I, II, III, IV, unstageable, deep tissue injuries, medical device related pressure injuries and mucosal membrane pressure injuries
        • Understand the difference between an unavoidable and avoidable pressure injury
        • Understand the unique items relating to the documentation of a pressure Injury
      • Correctly assess and document non-pressure related etiologies
        • Arterial
        • Venous
        • Neuropathic
        • Skin Tears
        • MASD
    • Anatomic location
    • Measurements – including undermining and tunneling
    • Wound bed tissue types –
      • Granulation
      • Slough – different types
      • Eschar
    • Periwound characteristics
    • Exudate
    • Odor
    • S/S of infection
    • Pain
    • Any other factors affecting wound healing
  • Review and understand different types of debridement: autolytic, conservative sharp, surgical sharp, biological and enzymatic

Step 3

Treatment and Prevention (2 hours plus 1 hour hands on demo/case review)

  • Understand Moist Wound Healing Goals
  • Review compliant dressing change procedure
  • Understand concept of “Clean it like you mean it”
  • Review products and appropriate use to target Moist Wound Healing
    • Primary dressings
    • Secondary dressings
    • Tertiary dressings
  • Review frequency of change considerations
  • Understand how orders should be written
  • Identify risk factors for developing a wound and implementation of prevention strategies

About the Instructor:
Dr. Nancy McNally, PT, DPT, CWS
Dr. Nancy McNally is the Vice President of Wound Care Education and Clinical Services of CURITEC. Dr. McNally is a licensed Physical Therapist (PT) and a Certified Wound Specialist (CWS). After graduating with her doctorate of physical therapy degree from UT Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, TX, Dr. McNally quickly recognized her desire to specialize in wound care and went on to earn her CWS certification. Dr. McNally brings 20+ years of wound care experience to our team, her experience includes caring for patients across the continuum of care – inpatient, outpatient, wound care center, long-term care, and hospice. For the last 18 years, she has focused on the long-term care and hospice arenas, specifically specializing in educating others on clinical best practices for wound prevention and management as well as CMS regulatory components. Dr. McNally is passionate about educating and supporting our partners so that, together, we can deliver evidence based wound care that benefits our residents/patients and our healthcare family.
