Abilities Care Course- Texas

Rehabilitation & Communication for Patients with Neurocognitive Impairments

REGISTRATION CLOSES August 21st, 2023 12:00 PM

September 16th, 2023 9:00 AM to 4:30 PM

This training consists of 3 parts – You must complete all three parts for Education Credit.

The course begins with a MANDATORY 30 minute Live WebEx on Tuesday, August 22nd from 12:15pm-12:45pm  – once registration closes each attendee will be emailed a link to attend the Live WebEx. Following the WebEx you will be assigned self-study courses through your LMS. You must complete and pass the post test before the live in person course on SEPTEMBER 16th, 2023.

Self-Study Access through the LMS – Rise Levels 1-4 (Once registered at BuildingTherapyLeaders.com these will be assigned in your training profile) (2 hours)

  • Applying the remaining Abilities of Individuals with dementia Early Stage
  • Applying the remaining Abilities of Individuals with dementia Middle Stage
  • Applying the remaining Abilities of Individuals with dementia Late Stage
  • Applying the remaining Abilities of Individuals with dementia End Stage

Each session will take approximately 30-40 minutes to complete – You must pass the posttest and complete the evaluation to be considered complete. 

The Live in Person part of the course will be on Saturday Sept. 16th, 2023 – DoubleTree by Hilton San Antonio Airport * 611 NW Loop 410 * San Antonio TX 78216

Course Overview:  During this course, participants will engage in small group activities, discussion, lecture, and case studies to examine the impact of neurocognitive impairments on the rehabilitation process and daily functioning of patients with Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias. Participants will identify the remaining abilities and challenges of persons in all stages of dementia and identify effective stage-specific intervention approaches. Participants will learn effective techniques for managing the behavioral and communication challenges common to each stage of dementia.

  • PT Will earn 7.5 Education Units (.75 CEUs)
  • OT will earn 8 Education Units (.8 CEUs)
  • SLP will earn .8 ASHA CEUs

Jon Anderson, PT
Jon Anderson, PT Jon is a certified instructor for Abilities Care Approach. As a Therapy Resource for Ensign Services, Inc. Jon uses his experience to train other therapists in assessments and treatment approaches to facilitate the best Functional Maintenance Program including, knowledge of treatment planning, goals, and general caregiver approaches
Patty Fantauzzo, OT
Patricia (Patty) Fantauzzo is a COTA/L, Therapy Program Manager for Julia Temple Healthcare, Chief Therapy Officer for the Endura market, and Operations Manager for Julia Temple Outpatient Services in Colorado. She has been at Julia Temple for the past 8 years where they provide therapy to subacute patients in addition to specialized care for long term care residents with progressive cognitive impairments including Dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. Patty was a 2019 Colorado Healthcare Association finalist for the “Spotlight On Excellence Award” for therapy professionals and was recently awarded the NBCOT Impact Award for her commitment and work towards improving knowledge of and quality of life for those living with Alzheimer’s and other forms of Dementia. Her career spans over 28 years and in addition to providing hands on occupational therapy, Patty enjoys advocating for and presenting both locally and nationally on the benefits of therapy and personalized care for those living with Alzheimer’s and other forms of Dementia.
Jayna Owens, SLP
Jayna Owens, SLP, is a multi-site management operations therapy resource with over 10 years of experience in dementia care. She has a proven track record of developing and implementing long-term care programs that improve the quality of life for residents with dementia. Her expertise includes dementia design, grant writing, and working with multiple teams to deliver high-quality care.
Jayna’s passion for dementia care began during her time as a rehab director at a large skilled nursing facility in Texas. She saw firsthand the challenges that residents with dementia and their families faced, and she was determined to make a difference. In her role as a therapy resource, Jayna has developed innovative programs that have helped residents with dementia maintain their independence and quality of life.
Jayna is also a strong advocate for dementia design. She believes that the physical environment can have a significant impact on the well-being of people with dementia. Jayna is committed to creating spaces that are both safe and stimulating. She has written and received approval for multiple grants for facilities specific to dementia care, and she is currently working on a dementia design project in one of the memory care units she services.
Jayna’s work has been featured in several publications, and she is a frequent presenter at conferences.
