SLP Clinical Practice 2023 - CA

SLP Clinical Practice – Evidence Based and Functional in 2023

Course Overview
During four-hour course participants will engage in small group activities, discussion, lecture and case studies with documentation practice as they identify the SLP role in the PDPM process, discuss assessment and treatments for dysphagia, as well as learn ways to handle end of life discussions. Assessment tools will include well known tests such as the Eat-10 and Yale Swallow Protocol, as well as newer tests such as the Test of Masticating and Swallowing Solids (TOMASS). Interventions will include use of respiratory muscle strength training as well as evidenced-based exercises such as chin tuck against resistance. Participants will receive training in development of long-term care programs including identification of residents, the importance of continued focus on post-COVID-19 residents, goal setting and use of a team approach to care. Finally, participants will learn how to conduct and document skilled maintenance programs.

Instructor: Elyse Matson, MA, CCC-SLP is a Speech Pathologist and SLP Resource for Ensign Services, Inc. She has been an SLP for more than 30 years and has been with Ensign for 15 years. Elyse has training in VitalStim, Ampcare LSVT, and myofascial release. She has worked in settings across the medical rehab field including, acute care, outpatient, inpatient rehab, home health, skilled nursing and management. She has a special interest in working with patients with tracheostomies and the interaction of respiration, swallowing and speech. Elyse is an Abilities Care specialist and educator for Ensign.
